Four students from Lakeland High School and Walter Panas High School were recognized at the Westchester Science and Engineering Fair (WESEF) Award Ceremony

Four students from Lakeland High School and Walter Panas High School were recognized at the Westchester Science and Engineering Fair (WESEF) Award Ceremony on Thursday, March 23, 2023. Over 500 regional high school students showcased exceptional research and stunning presentations of their work in the competition.

From Lakeland HS:
Ilan Villard
(LHS) earned the Ricoh Sustainable Development award, which is awarded to a student with outstanding efforts in addressing issues of environmental responsibility
and sustainable development.
Valentina Mejia
(LHS) placed 4 in the Behavior and Social Sciences category.
Garv Agarwal (LHS) earned the George D. Yancopoulous Young Scientist Award for Innovations in Science, which is awarded to a student whose passion for science may
lead to the development of novel technologies or biological insights. Garv also placed 2nd in the Computational Biology and Bio-informatics category.

From Walter Panas HS:
Brook Sacks (WPHS) placed 4th in the Cellular and Molecular Biology category.

Three Students Qualify for Sectionals and New York State High School Swimming Championships

Swimmer
Alex Gorzula
is one of the most talented swimmers in the history of the Rebel Men’s Varsity Swim Team. This season he was a captain for the second year in a row. He qualified for Sectionals in every individual event he swam [the 200 Free, 200 IM, 50 Free, 100 Free, 500 Free, and 100 Breaststroke]. At Sectionals he finished in 4th place overall as a member of the 200 Medley Relay team, 8th in the 200 IM, 5th as a member of the 200 Freestyle Relay team, and 3rd in the 100 Breaststroke. He also broke two team records this season, in the 200 IM and the
100 Breaststroke; both records that he previously owned. He qualified for the New York State High School Boys Swimming Championships in four events [the 200 Freestyle, 200  Individual Medley, 500 Freestyle, and 100 Breaststroke], and finished in 16th place. He graduates as a Rebel team record holder [200 Individual Medley, 500 Freestyle, 200 Freestyle Relay, and 100 Breaststroke]. Quite the career-best of luck with your bright future!

Swimmer Will Fagan
Will Fagan is a very versatile swimmer for the Rebels. He qualified for Sectionals this season in six areas [the 200 Freestyle, 200 IM, 100 Butterfly, 500 Freestyle, 100 Backstroke, and 100 Breaststroke]. At Sectionals he finished in 4th place overall as a member of the 200 Medley Relay team, 9th place overall in the 500 Freestyle, 8th place in the 100 Breaststroke, and 6th place as a member of the 400 Freestyle Relay. Will qualified for the New York State High School swimming Championships as a member of the 200 Medley Relay team-a feat that has not been accomplished by the Rebels since 2009! We look forward to seeing him compete in his final season next year as a senior!

Ronan White Swimmer
Ronan White is a very well-rounded swimmer for the Rebels. Ronan made great strides this season and as a sophomore earned a role as captain. This season he qualified for Sectionals in the 500 Freestyle and 100 Backstroke. At Sectionals he finished in 4th place overall as a member of the 200 Medley Relay team, 15th place in the 500 Freestyle, and 12th place in the 100 Backstroke. Ronan qualified for the New York State High School Swimming Championships as a member of the 200 Medley Relay team-a feat that has not been accomplished by the Rebels since 2009! We look forward to seeing him grow as a leader and compete in his next two seasons as a Rebel!

Gymnast
Olivia Marricco (LHS )
Olivia Marricco is a freshman at Lakeland High School and team captain. Olivia had a very good season all around. Her highest score was 37.6 at the Division 2 tournament where she captured 1st place overall and 1st on Uneven Bars with a score of 9.6. She placed 4th all-around at Sectionals and 1st on Uneven Bars. Olivia has qualified two years in a row for the State Championships. At the State Championships, she placed 12th overall, 5th on Bars, and 6th on Floor. Congratulations to Olivia on an amazing season!

Hayley Madden (WPHS)
Hayley is a junior at Walter Panas High School and team co-captain. She competed all around the entire season delivering very solid routines at
Gymnast 2
every event. Her highest score was 34.15 at the Division 2 tournament. Hayley qualified for the second year in a row at the State Championships, where she competed on the Floor exercise. Congratulations to Hayley for her dedication andhard work!

Bobby Maclem athlete
Indoor Track & Field: Bobby Mayclim (WPHS)
Bobby Mayclim has put together the best season by any distance runner in the program´s 60-plus-year history! He broke the school record in the 1000-meter run cruising to a league title in the event. Bobby ran to a Section 1 Class AA title in the 1600-meter run with a time of 4:22.33. He also broke the 3200-meter run school record three times this season. Bobby won the Section 1 State Championship qualifier with a very impressive time of 9:16.38. He lowered the school record by a total of 27 seconds and finished the season ranked 6th in NYPHSAA in all classes.

Wrestling Athlete
Wrestling: Stephen Carroll (LHS)

Stephen Carroll, a 3 sport varsity athlete and Captain of the Lakeland / Panas Rebels wrestling team had an amazing season this winter. He had an overall record of 37 wins and 10 losses. He was a finalist at the Westchester County Championships, a Divisional Champion, a Sectional finalist,and qualifier for the New York State Championship Tournament. At the state tournament, Stephen lost 2 extremely competitive matches to top-ranked competitors. Overall, he earned all-league and all-section honors and plans to continue wrestling in college.

WPHS Girls Basketball Champions
Walter Panas Girls Basketball:
The Walter Panas Girls Varsity Basketball team has had quite the historic season, which actually isn’t over yet! The team finished the regular season with a 15-5 record. During the sectional
playoffs the team defeated Yorktown, then defeated 3rd seeded Pearl River to advance to the final four of the section at the Westchester County Center. In the Sectional Tournament the team defeated Mahopac in the semifinal game and then went on to beat Harrison to win the Sectional Title and the Gold Ball. This is the first Sectional Title for the girls basketball program in school history. During the Regionals, Panas crushed Union Endicott and then won the Regionals by defeating the 8th ranked team in the state, Wallkill.

Bobby Mayclim
Bobby Mayclim (Lakeland Panas Boys Cross Country): Section 1, Class A Champion
 Walter Panas junior and team captain, Bobby Mayclim, had a fantastic year for the Lakeland Panas Boys Cross Country Team. Coming off a leg injury in the spring, he was able to recover and compete at a high level. From the first meet of the year in early September to the Westchester County Championships at the end of October, Bobby never finished below second place. Battling sickness for the final two races of the season, Bobby was able to finish sixth overall in Class A at the Sectional Championships to qualify for the NYSPHSAA State Championships. Once at the StateChampionship, a 30th overall finish in Class A (47th in the overall merge) saw him named to the New York State Federation meet. Bobby was able to overcome injuries and ran one of the best seasons in Rebel Cross Country history. Congrats Bobby on a job well done!


Lakeland Girls Varsity Volleyball: Section 1, Class A Champions Congratulations to the Lakeland Varsity Volleyball team for winning the Section 1 Class A Championship. ItLakeland Varsity was the first time in school history that the volleyball team won a Section 1 title. The team finished the regular season with a 16-3 record and then went on to defeat Nyack, Eastchester, Panas, and finally Horace Greeley in the championship game to win the tournament. The team then lost to Cornwall in the regional finals finishing with a 20-4 record; the most wins by any Lakeland team in school history. The team was led by senior captain Kayla Jennings who recorded her 1,000th kill during the season and was voted All-Section and 3rd team All-State. Senior captain Olivia Berkson and senior Sarah Cahill received all-conference honors, and junior captain Emma Dedushaj and eighth-grader Kelly Mallon received all-section and 3rd team all-state honors. Congratulations to this history-making team! Lakeland Varsity Field Hockey: Section 1, Class B Champions



The 2022 Lakeland Varsity Field Hockey team may be the youngest team ever, but that didn't stop them from another incredible season, winning both the 2022 LeagueField Hockey Championship for the 26th consecutive year (33rd year overall) and the Section 1 Championship for the 13th consecutive time (22nd year overall). Led by team captains Bella Basulto, Emma Numme, Emily Yazzetti, and Celeste Pagliaroli, the Hornets finished the season with an 18-2-1 record, ranking number 2 overall in the Lohud Field Hockey poll and number 15 in the Northeast Region by Max Field Hockey. Individual athlete recognitions were awarded to many team members this season, including:
● Senior Celeste Pagliaroli received the National Field Hockey Coaches Association
All Region Award, Con Edison Scholastic Sports Award, and the Section 1
Coaches Association Scholarship.
● All State recognition was awarded to Bella Basulto, Celeste Pagliaroli, and Gabby
Santini.
● All Section recognition was awarded to Bella Basulto, Emma Numme, Celeste
Pagliaroli, Gabby Santini, and Emily Yazzetti.
● All League recognition was awarded to Bella Basulto, Keira Gallagher, Anna
Lemma, Emma Numme, Celeste Pagliaroli, Gabby Santini, and Emily Yazzetti.
● All League Honorable Mention recognition was awarded to Alyssa Petrilli and
Charlotte Sabert.

SALUTES CON ED ATHLETE OF THE WEEK CELESTE PAGLIAROLI

Lakeland
 Salutes Celeste Pagliaroli, Con Ed Athlete of the Week! Lakeland Field Hockey Goalie, two-year team captain, and four year starter, Celeste Pagliaroli's talent, leadership, and commitment are just some of the reasons she has received this impressive recognition.

Celeste boasts a 90% save percentage and 14 shutouts this season, with a total of 52 shutouts throughout her field hockey career. She was a four-year starter for the Varsity Team and has won a Championship in every season. As a freshman, Celeste and her teammates won the Class B State Championship. As a sophomore during the Covid year, she won the Westchester/Putnam Small School Regional Championship. In both her junior and senior years, Celeste won the Class B Section 1 Championship and was Regional Finalist.

Coach Sarsen describes Celeste as, "an outstanding athlete with a complete skill set." She also shared that Celeste's strongest attribute is her leadership and ability to step up in big games; including leading a young, inexperienced defense and giving them the confidence and direction to compete.

Celeste was All League, All Section, and All State this season for Lakeland. She also was a recipient of the 2022 Section 1 Field Hockey Coaches Association Scholarship.

Atrue
 leader, Celeste is the first one to volunteer within her school, community, and team.  After graduation, she plans to study Education while minoring in Coaching at Long Island University, where she has committed to play Division 1 Field Hockey for the Sharks.

Aryonna has received this award for her work in the Cosmetology Program and Bryonna for her studies in the Sports Medicine Program.

School Board Recognition Week (Oct 17-21)

This week is School Board Recognition Week. Did you know that combined, our current Board Trustees have volunteered on behalf of LCSD for over 35 years?

It takes strong schools to build a strong community, and these men and
women devote countless hours to making sure all Lakeland students achieve educational excellence. They make tough decisions every month and spend many hours studying education issues and regulations in order to provide the kind of accountability our community deserves.

Education members for their dedication and service to our community.

Congratulations to Haden Gold, Lauren Kim, Christian Laughlin, and Liam Webb for their outstanding recognition from the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA)!

Haden, Christian, and Liam will be performing alongside the best music students from across New York State at the NYSSMA All-State Winter Conference, held on December 1 - 4 in Rochester, NY. The concert will be performed at the esteemed Eastman Theatre.

Haden, Christian, Liam, and Lauren have been selected as members of the Area All-State ensembles, featuring the top musicians in Westchester County. Our students will be rehearsing and performing a concert with their peers from school districts throughout Westchester County: Haden on Timpani, Lauren on Oboe, Christian on Clarinet, and Liam on Trumpet!

Haden Gold, a junior at Lakeland High School, was selected as an alternate for the NYSSMA All-State Symphonic Band based on his score of 97 at his audition last Spring. Haden is a percussionist with the Lakeland High School Wind Ensemble. Haden has performed in musicals at both high schools, as a vocalist with the Walter Panas Chamber Choir, and at Marching Band events. His teacher is Matthew Kowalski.

Lauren Kim, a junior at Walter Panas High School, was selected for NYSSMA Zone 11 (Westchester County) Area All-State based on her score of 100 at her audition last Spring. Lauren is an oboist with the Walter Panas High School Wind Ensemble. Additionally, Lauren is also a dedicated member of the extracurricular music ensembles at Walter Panas performing with the Marching Panthers as well as the Jazz Ensemble. Her teacher is Patrick Murphy.

Christian Laughlin, a junior at Walter Panas High School, was selected for the NYSSMA All-State Symphonic Band based on his score of 100 at his audition last Spring.  Christian is a clarinet player with the Walter Panas High School Wind Ensemble. Christian is also a multi-instrumentalist and has participated in the pit for both Walter Panas  and Lakeland High School's musicals. His teacher is Patrick Murphy.

Liam Webb, a senior at Lakeland High School, was selected for the NYSSMA All-State Symphonic Band based on his score of 100 at his audition last Spring. Liam is a trumpet player with the Lakeland High School Wind Ensemble and very musically active in our community, including participation as the principal trumpet player in the Greater Westchester Youth Orchestras Association. His teacher is Matthew Kowalski.
