Regulation Info: 6148R

The Board of Education values excellence and wishes to instill in students the desire to do their best in all things. Therefore, it shall be the policy of this Board to recognize outstanding academic accomplishment.

The designation of high school senior class valedictorian and salutatorian will be based on the calculation of all credited courses through the end of the last marking period of junior year.

In order to be eligible to be the sole class valedictorian or salutatorian, a student must have attended one of the high schools in the Lakeland Central School District for two full school years, with grades having been awarded in such high school for at least eight marking periods. Notwithstanding the above, whenever a transfer student who has not attended high school in the Lakeland Central School District for at least two years has a grade point average which is determined to be equal to or higher than that of the valedictorian or salutatorian designated under this policy, he/she shall be designated as co-valedictorian and/or co-salutatorian, respectively, in recognition of the outstanding efforts of all involved.

The determination regarding the equivalency of grades for a transfer student from another school shall be made by the Building Principal and shall be subject to appeal to the Superintendent of Schools and, then, to the Board of Education.
