January Principal's Newsletter

 February 1, 2019

Dear Parents, Guardians & Students,

The weather is so unpredictable outdoors but inside Van Cortlandtville the sun shines brighter each day. Student achievement continues to blossom!

This month the character theme is “Fair Play”. Eleanor Roosevelt said “It is not fair to ask of others what you are not willing to do yourself.” We will discuss our PBIS topic in class and throughout the building all month.
In the beginning of the month, our registration process will once again begin where we will welcome our incoming kindergarteners for the 2019-2020 school year. Registration packets are available in the school office and on-line. In order to register, the packets must be completed and include all documentation that is requested. Only parents/legal guardians may attend registration to enroll the student. Please note that the registration schedule is as follows:
February 4th, 5th and 6th from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon @ VCES
February 7th from 5:30-8:30 p.m. @ VCES
As we continue our celebration of “Culture, Kindness and Tolerance” we hope our students are taking away a powerful message and are sharing it with you at home. We will continue to respect and celebrate diversity at Van Cort each day. I hope to see you at our third PTA sponsored Multicultural evening, which will take place on February 1st. Last year, this evening was a great success and we are sure that this year it will be even bigger and better! VCES, LCBMS and Panas will host the night as a team.
We will be having our Reading Week beginning on February 11th. Our author, Jerry Pinkney, will be visiting on Thursday, February 14th and there will be many other wonderful activities planned for that week.
Our One-Book-One-School Kickoff is on May 6th. The book we will be reading this year is The World According to Humphrey by Betty G. Birney. The month will be packed with so many wonderful activities for all the students to enjoy.
Just a reminder, that it is imperative to contact the office and your child’s teacher when there has been a change in your home, cell or work phone numbers. We will then share the change(s) with the school nurse, food services and transportation.
As always please drop by or call if you have any questions or feedback.

We are very excited to continue with the “Van Cort Celebrates Community” initiative.  This enables anyone to give a shout-out for a special Van Cort adult community member who has gone above and beyond.  All requests must please come from adults.  This is similar to how we celebrate our students at our Character Education assemblies and in our quarterly newsletters.  The shout-outs will be posted on our Facebook page on a monthly basis.

Every month, your shout-out should be emailed  In the subject line please write “VC Community Shout-out”.  You will need to enter the name of the person receiving the shout-out and why they deserve this honor.  All shout-outs will be reviewed for approval by Principal Woodruff.  The deadline for all shout-out emails will be posted each month either on Facebook or through email.  Sorry, but any emails received after the deadline will not get the chance to be posted until the following month.

The success of “Van Cort Celebrates Community” on your Facebook page depends on you.  The deadline for February shout-outs will be Friday, February 22, 2019.
