District's Staff and Alumni Part of Westchester Symphonic Winds performs a concert, "Connections", on Sunday, November 10.
The strength and history of the district’s music program will be on display when the Westchester Symphonic Winds performs a concert, “Connections”, on Sunday, November 10. The afternoon’s program will have a distinctive Lakeland Central School District note as four Lakeland District Music Staff and four Walter Panas Alumni will have prominent parts in the evening’s musical presentation.
The Panas connections open that day with Lakeland Copper Beech Middle School Music teacher and 1983 Panas graduate, Richard Dashnaw serving as an apprentice conductor on his own original piece - Rhapsody for Clarinet. Joining him for the evening will be his sister Jenn Dashnaw (Panas, ’87) as a clarinet soloist. Jenn who spent 20 years as an Air Force Clarinetist before retiring a few years ago. It will be the first performance of his musical composition since the original in 1986.
“I originally wrote the piece for my sister in 1986 when she was a senior at Walter Panas and she performed it in a concert that year,” explained Dashnaw. Now, a ‘few years’ later, she will join her conductor/composer brother as a clarinet soloist as the WSW performs the piece.
The Panas connection at the concert doesn’t end there as Rick Russo, currently a Music Teacher at Lakeland Copper Beech MS and another Panas (1998) graduate transcribed the harp part for guitar and will perform on guitar with the orchestra on another selection that evening ‘Volver a la Montana.’
And performing with the WSW that afternoon will also be: Debbie Dashnaw as Principal Flutist. She is the Grade 5 Band Director at Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and Lincoln-Titus elementary schools. George Washington Elementary School Chorus and Music Teacher Janice Vuoso will be First Flute, Second Chair.
Rich Dashnaw, Deb Dashnaw, and Janice Vuolo are esteemed musicians who play regularly with WSW.
To round out the district musical connections, Scott Bernitt, a 2000 Lakeland High School graduate and former student of the Dashnaw’s, is in the French horn section.
And in one more connection, they will be performing ‘Fanfare for Brass Quintet’ written by the Dashnaw’s daughter, Grace, who is a Cello Performance/Composition major at Ithaca. It will be her compositions first public (non-college) performance.
The concert “Connections” will be held at the Tarrytown Music Hall starting at 3 pm.
This is the WSW’s 32nd season and this evening presentation is one of three they will perform this season. For more information including tickets, here is the link, click here: https://tickets.tarrytownmusichall.org/eventperformances.asp?evt=2191
