Southern Plantation Colonial Home Parlor

Family and friends would talk, read poems and play games. If they moved a table in the middle of the room to play games, the slaves would move it back against a wall. This was called “putting a room to rest." Musical instruments such as the piano and harpsichord were played. A harpsichord looks like a small piano. The men went to another room to smoke, drink and talk about politics. Women were not allowed to be a part of these activities!

The parlor and the dining room were the most elegant rooms in the house. After dinner the owners of the home liked to entertain their friends and important people in the parlor. They impressed their guests with their fancy furniture, delicious food, and beautiful artwork.

When the planter and his wife had a big party, everyone would dance. It was very important to know how to dance. Dance masters would go to a plantation and teach the family to dance. Sometimes they danced until 2:00 o'clock in the morning!
