The Southern Plantation Home had many bedrooms. The bedrooms were on the second and third floors. Fireplaces were in most of the bedrooms. Rich planters had beautiful furniture, curtains, carpets and bed sheets.

The Master bedroom was for the planter and his wife. Usually the Master bedroom was the largest bedroom in the house. The planter and his wife invited many guests to show off their home because of their fancy furniture, delicious food, and the beautiful artwork. This impressed the guests. The home had at least one guest bedroom and sometimes many more.

Childrens' bedrooms and beds were usually smaller than the others. Somtimes children would share a bedroom. Most of the time a baby would sleep in the nursery located near the servant’s bedroom, or the servant would sleep in the same room.
A feather mattress was used in the winter and a straw mattress in the summer. Bugs and insects were found in the mattresses so a servant would have to remove the bugs from the mattresses. That is how the saying, “Don’t let the bed bugs bite” got started.

The clothes were stored in wooden dressers or chests. Also, clothes were hung on the walls. A basin filled with water on a washstand was used to clean their hands and faces. They didn’t take baths very often. They thought it not to be unhealthy.
