Saltbox Colonial Home Parlor

Most of the heat went up the chimney so the family would sit very close to the fire to keep warm on cold nights.
The parlor was a special room in the colonial home. The best furniture in the house was kept there. The family would spend there time in the parlor after working hard all day. Guests would be greeted and entertained in there. Some activities done in the parlor were resting, reading, needlework, games, and having magic shows. The games played in the parlor were called parlor games Two parlor games played by the children were “Pinch, No Smiling” and “Musical Chairs.”

“Musical Chairs” has lasted hundreds and hundreds of years and is still played the same way today at little boys' and girls' birthday parties. One of their favorite games was “Pinch, No Smiling.” The children would sit in a circle and each player would pinch the nose of his or her neighbor. The first one to laugh or smile had to put a toy in the circle. At the end of the game, the winner would give the losers an activity so they could win back their toy. One activity might have been hopping around the room on one foot. Also, in the parlor colonial children would dress up and perform plays such as “Little Red Riding Hood.”
