The kitchen was a very important room in the colonial home. The women and girls were responsible for crushing grain to make flour, baking bread, churning butter, washing and sewing clothes and cooking meals. These chores were done in the kitchen. It was hard work without electricity and running water. The walls might be made of different types of wood such as cherry, maple or walnut.

One of the cooking tools used was a frying pan. It had a long handle and three legs called spiders. Dinner was the main meal of the day. Colonists ate their dinner in the late afternoon. The colonists needed a lot of energy in the morning to be able to work long hard days, so they ate a good breakfast.

The garden was very important to the colonists. They needed to plant crops which were part of their meals. Everyone in the family worked hard to produce vegetables and fruit so they could have food all year long.
