Log Cabin Colonial Home - Fireplace Area
Candles were used to light the cabin. The mother and daughters made the candles. A metal mold or dipping was used to make the candles.
Usually the fireplace was large and built with stones. It provided the heat for the cabin. The fire was kept burning most of the day. In the evening after working hard all day the family would relax around the fireplace. The family would read books and letters, sing songs, and tell stories.

A broom was used to clean the chimney. To clean a tall chimney, a chicken or goose was put in the top of the chimney. The bird would try to get out by moving its wings up and down. This movement would clean the soot off the chimney.
