When the family used the parlor, they would be dressed in their nicest clothes. The best furniture was in the parlor so children had to be very good. Sunday was a day of rest, so the parlor was used a lot on that day. It was a room for playing games and being together. Colonists loved playing guessing games to test their knowledge. If the family owned a piano it would be in the parlor.

When a girl was old enough to date someone they would meet each other in the parlor. The girl might play the piano for her date. It was considered wrong to leave young people together without a chaperone. A chaperone made sure they behaved correctly on their date. The grandmother sometimes was the chaperone. She would knit while keeping an eye on the couple.
