Slaves

Here come the slaves. Notice that the women and men are wearing patched clothes because they worked on farms and in the house with daily chores. Unlike rich women, women slaves didn’t have to wear stays. A stay was worn under a woman’s bodice. It was laced tightly to make her waist look small. Slaves didn’t have any money so they wore torn up clothing. Check out their hats. They were called bonnets. They used this hat so their hair didn’t catch on fire while cooking.

Slave men wore linen pants and linen shirts, as well as a jacket. Also they’d wear tall hats because most men worked in the field most days.
