Colonial Clothing Project Overview

This year, Art, Library, Technology and the Fourth Grades decided to collaborate on another Colonial times-inspired project: Colonial clothing. In each of the three 4th grades, students worked in collaborative groups themselves as they explored what different populations wore during Colonial times. These populations were: women, men, boys, girls, slaves, Native American, American soldiers and British soldiers.

In Library class with Mrs. Canini, students learned about helpful and appropriate sources such as print encyclopedia, nonfiction books, subscription databases and student search engines. They learned how to locate accurate information, cite their sources and take notes.

Using this information, the students then created foam core models of their group in Art class with Mrs. Pietruska. The students used fabric, paper and paint on foam insulation to create a sculptural collage of these colonial figures.

The 4th grade teachers, Miss Armstrong, Mrs. Peckham and Mrs. Markowitz, worked with the students on writing about this clothing in Social Studies class. Using research that had been gathered in Library class, the students worked in groups to develop a narration for their focus area (Women, Men, etc.) for the Colonial Fashion Show.

Mrs. Carcova, our technology specialist, took digital photographs of the project for use on the L-T website. She developed the Colonial Clothing webpages to be an extension of the Colonial Homes project.

The culminating event was held on Tuesday, June 21 in the APR at Lincoln-Titus E.S. The 4th grade students presented a stylish (for the times!) fashion show to the 3rd graders and teachers – complete with narration.
