Colonial Children
Here come the Colonial Boys. Look at their vests, knee breeches, and tricorn hats. The vests they wore came in colors such as brown, blue and red. They also wore knee breeches, which are pants that are cut to the knees. Under these short pants they wore long stockings made of wool or linen. Young boys’ shirts were often made of cotton. The boys also wore undershirts. Notice the boy’s shoes that are black with silver buckles. The buckles were there to give the feet protection. For church and school, boys wore a jacket to dress up their outfit. The jackets could be laced or buttoned down the front. Don’t they look like little men?

Wow check out the girls! Look at how beautiful their skirts and dresses are! People in colonial times didn’t think it was suitable for girls and women to wear breeches, which are pants. Did you know girls only owned two dresses? One of the dresses was for everyday and the other dress was for special occasions and going to church on Sunday. Blue, yellow, red, and purple were the most popular colors to wear even though there were other colors available. Girls had to wear 5 layers in the winter and wore dresses all the time. Imagine having to wear that many layers!
That would make going to the necessary (their word for bathroom) pretty hard.

They wore aprons to help keep their dresses clean when helping their mother around the house. Did you know that girls wore bonnets most of the time? Colonial girls wore bonnets so their hair would not get in the way when doing their chores. They also wore beautiful ribbons in their hair as well.
