Take a look at the Astronauts' Mission Patches

Do you know:

Fun activity to remember the planets' names and order in our solar system.

Mars has four seasons just like Earth but they are twice as long.
Your summer vacation would last 4 months but you would go to school for 20 months!!

A year on Mars is nearly twice as long as a year here on Earth. It takes the Red Planet 687 Earth days to circle the Sun.

If NASA means NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION, what does Aeronautics mean?

(Click on the word "Aeronautics" to discover its meaning)
How old is NASA, if it was founded in 1958?

Mission Patch
Every time a rocket or space shuttle lifts off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, the astronauts on board wear a unique mission patch which sometimes they have designed. Cape Canaveral is one of NASA's locations. Below are just a few mission patches.

Space shuttle mission patch

Astronauts, you will create a mission patch in KidPix software. First, visit the NASA site about mission patches.

The patch must show:

  • your name
  • the name of the spacecraft or mission
  • a picture
    • spacecraft
    • flag
    • mars
    • earth

Planet Names and Order Activity

The nine planets in our solar system are:
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

You can remember the order of the planets like this:

My Very Educated Mother Just Showed Us Nine Planets.

Why not make up one of your own and share it with the other astronauts?

Astronauts Log
  • Tuesdays, January 27th and February 3, 2004, the astronauts training schedule was changed. They attended a flight stimulation class.
  • Tuesday, February 10th the astronauts began creating a mission patch using KidPix software.
  • Tuesday, February 24, 2004 the astronauts completed their mission patches and began researching the NASA web sites to learn more about the planet they will be visiting. A web organizer created in Inspiration was used so the astronauts could organize their facts.
  • Tuesday, March 2, 2004 the astronauts completed the "Mission to Mars" web organizer. Now, they know some very important facts about Mars. These facts will help them on their mission. Also, they watched an online video on Mars Exploration Rover Mission.   The video helped them draw the spacecraft they will be using on their mission.
  • Tuesday, March 9, 2004 the astronauts completed their spacecraft drawings. A rock from Mars helped them read the story, The Story of a Little Rock on Mars. Each astronauts used the digital camera to take a photograph of another astronaut holding his/her mission patch and "Little Rock."
  • Wednesday, March 24, 2004 the astronauts experimented with Adobe Elements software. They used the features of Adobe to make their digital photographs REALLY COOL!
