A big volcano named Mount Vesuvius erupted in Pompeii, Italy in A.D.
79. I will tell you about the city, what happened during the eruption,
and when Pompeii was rediscovered.
The city of Pompeii was built as an oval about 2 miles around. A big
wall was built around the city. The streets were made out of blocks
of lava. The roads might still have imprints of very old wheel ruts.
There was an open square, or forum in the center of Pompeii surrounded
by many buildings. |

| Sixteen
years before Mount Vesuvius erupted, other earthquakes in A.D. 63
damaged Pompeii. Although Vesuvius started rumbling, the people were
not alarmed about the massive and deadly eruption of this volcano.
When Mount Vesuvius did erupt, Pompeii was pummeled with hot ashes,
stones, and cinders. There were poisonous gases and fumes in the dark
air. The town was covered with hot lava and no one survived the eruption.

The
hot lava dried and preserved the town for many many years.
Pompeii was rediscovered in the early 1700’s. Every year there
are excavations in Pompeii to learn more about its past.
Some
objects that have been rediscovered are on display in The National
Museum at Naples, Italy about 13 miles from Pompeii. Many tourist
visit Pompeii to learn about the city and Mount Vesuvius.
