| Hi,
I am a fifth grade student at Lincoln-Titus Elementary School. All fifth
graders participate in the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program.
We are learning very important information in the program that will help
us make the right choices in life. I liked to share with you what I am learning.
Tobacco
Each year over 400,000 people die from a disease caused by tobacco. If
you smoke or chew tobacco you have a big chance of getting lung cancer.
People who have quit smoking many years ago still have a big chance of
getting lung cancer. There are 200 known poisons in cigarette smoke!
Most teenagers began
smoking cigarettes because of peer pressure. Tobacco affects the way your
body develops. It also causes breathing problems. The smoke you exhale
and the smoke from the tobacco puts the health of people around you at
risk. If you don’t start smoking you will not have to QUIT!

Alcohol
Alcohol affects your brain. Some people drink to get rid of their problems.
If you drink or if you’re thinking of drinking ask yourself a question.
"What good does alcohol do for you and will it solve your problems?"
Also, alcohol makes
you react slower to different situations like driving a car. It slows
down your brain and body. When you use alcohol,
you do not think clearly or make the best decisions. Alcohol damages every
organ in your body.
If you
want to learn move about the damages tobacco and alcohol can do, visit

Fifth
Grade Teacher, Mrs. Crivelli writes:
The students in fifth grade were required to write a D.A.R.E. essay
describing their experience with Officer Gabrielsen and the D.A.R.E.
program. Valmir’s classmates selected him as the essay winner
from Mrs. Williams’s class. He has worked extremely hard the
past three weeks composing his essay about D.A.R.E. Valmir’s
efforts have been noticed and commended by peers and teachers alike.
It was important to Valmir to share his essay with his classmates
and community, so he decided to showcase it on his webpage.
The number one thing I love about being in 5th grade is that we have
the D.A.R.E. program. We were so close to not having the D.A.R.E program,
but Linda Puglisi found Officer Gabrielsen and he was more than happy
to teach us. He taught us what alcohol and cigarettes could do to
you, and he also taught us about peer pressure. |

He
taught us some very outstanding facts in a fun way. Officer Gabrielsen
and Mrs. Williams did a role-play to show our class what peer pressure
is and how to handle problems that we may be involved with. He told
us the consequences of being caught with drugs and he explained
to us the damage drugs could do to our bodies.
I
learned many things about alcohol. I learned you have to be 21 or
older to drink alcohol. I know that too much alcohol can lead to
a coma or death. In addition, alcohol kills brain cells and it goes
directly to your bloodstream. I also learned that every eight seconds
someone dies from
cigarette smoke. There are 101poisons in just one cigarette. Most
people smoke cigarettes because of nicotine. Nicotine is a very
addictive chemical. One day you smoke one cigarette the second day
you smoke two and it leads to more each day. I also learned about
peer pressure. Peer pressure is one someone makes you do something
that you don’t want to do. Mrs. Williams and Officer Gabrielsen
acted out how to handle problems we may have with peers.
As you can see, I have
learned a lot in D.A.R.E. this year. I think D.A.R.E. was the best
thing we learned this year because it was fun and informative. We
are becoming more mature and this was a very special gift to us.
I think D.A.R.E. made us way more mature and it gave us a feeling
of getting to know more about life and ourselves. Hopefully we will
get to pass D.A.R.E. onto the younger kids at Lincoln-Titus.
