Landsmarks of Cape May
By Carly L.

I have visited many landmarks in Cape May, New Jersey. I wanted to learn more about some of my favorite landmarks and share these great landmarks with people who visit my website. I hope you get a chance to visit these wonderful landmarks. Cape May is located at the southern tip of New Jersey. Many families spend their summer vacations at Cape May. I am very lucky because my grandparents live in Cape May!

Cape May Lighthouse
Cape May Point Lighthouse

Since 1859 the Cape May Lighthouse has helped ships along the Atlantic coast and into Delaware Bay. It is 170 feet tall and to reach the top you must climb 199 steps! From the top you can see the amusement parks in Wildwood, New Jersey and Sunset Beach where “The Atlantus” is located. The light at the top flashes every 15 seconds and sends out a 24-mile signal. You can take a trolley from the town and tour the lighthouse. It is a beautiful sight!

Congress Hall
Congress Hall

Congress Hall is a large hotel filled with history. It was the first large hotel to be built in Cape May. The hotel has a beautiful view of the beaches and Atlantic Ocean. The first hotel was built in 1816 by Tomas Hughes. It took two years to build. A fire in 1878 destroyed the hotel. The current Congress Hall was built in 1879 with bricks. United States Presidents Grant, Pierce, and Buchanan visited the hotel.

The hotel closed during the Great Depression (this was a time when many people did not have jobs and many businesses closed) and reopened after World War II. Recently the hotel was restored from top to bottom.

Concrete ship

The Atlantus
At Sunset Beach you can visit a concrete ship named “The Altlantus.” During World War I steel was hard to get so the United States built a few concrete ships. It was too heavy and too slow. The ship was towed to Cape May to be used a loading platform for a ferry service but it broke loose during a storm on June 8, 1926. It beached or settled at the Sunset Beach. The ship sinks more and more every year. Today most of the ship is underwater but you can still see a small part of it. At sunset it is a beautiful time to visit the beach. As the sun sets each night they have a flag ceremony. It is beautiful to watch. Millions of visitors come to Sunset Beach to see “The Atlantus.”
