This is a living site to document our work and keep you informed and involved in the development of this project. The first seed was planted with the idea to transform our newly enclosed courtyard into a learning laboratory. A grant was written by Mrs. Sandler and two parents, Mrs. Elizabeth Kogler and Mrs. Nancy Williams, and submitted to the Lakeland Education Foundation. A $5,000.00 grant award was bestowed in the summer of 2005.

Planning began in September and has continued throughout the 2005-2006 school year. A core committee consisting of volunteer parents, teachers and staff members have been hard at work. After doing research, networking with community resources, developing a design, aligning curriculum, purchasing and generating a work force, we have begun work on this phased project.

Within the Outdoor Classroom, we will have three major gardens: a kindergarten, first and second grade flower and vegetable garden, a grade 3 butterfly garden and a grade 4 Colonial herb and “three sisters” garden. A shed is being purchased to store gardening tools and equipment. A mural has been designed and is being hand-painted by parent artists on a corner wall to create a backdrop for a stage area for student poetry readings, skits and plays.

Work will continue into the 2006-2007 school year, with Phase II. An amphitheater will be created, with enough seating for classroom instruction, under a shaded portico. A small pond will also be developed during this final phase. Next year we will extend our school wide recycling effort to the Outdoor Classroom. We'll be learning how to compost!
