Field Trips
|
During the 2000-01 school year, a committee comprised of parents, teachers, and administrators was structured to review Lakeland's guidelines regarding field trip participation. They also reviewed and revised the forms teachers use for day trips and for overnight trips. It was determined that the purpose of field trips is to enhance the classroom educational experience, to provide an added dimension to what the students are studying. To this end, teachers select field trips carefully. They first consider the direct link to the New York State learning standards and the specific content being studied. Next, the quality of the field trip experience is considered. What and where is the site? Who will present/lead the experience? What is their reputation and level of professionalism? Also, the number of trips scheduled for the year and their cost must be weighed. |
| Our
faculty, building level administrators, and central office administrators
accept the responsibility for making these decisions. We aim for balance
and equity, ensuring that wonderful, curriculum-embedded experiences are
designed and provided to our students while preserving "time on task",
in-school instruction which is the core of every student's learning. Recognizing that out of school learning is an important component of an individual with a well-rounded education, we encourage children to participate in activities of their interest - the arts, athletics, scouts, and so forth. We cannot, however, dismiss classmates to attend the performances and presentations associated with these activities. This must occur on times other than when school is in session. And what a joy it is to attend a recital, demonstration, or competition! We in Lakeland will continue to strive to present a well-balanced instructional program driven by the New York State standards and measured by the New York State assessments. |
