DeWitt Clinton -
"Father of the Erie Canal"

After joining the Anti-Federalist party and serving in the New York State Legislator, DeWitt Clinton was elected a member of the United States Senate in 1802. During his short term, he worked to introduce the Twelfth Amendment to the United States Constitution. In 1803, DeWitt resigned from the Senate to be the Mayor of New York City. He remained mayor until 1815. As mayor he supported education, city planning, public sanitation, and help for the poor. Also, he assisted in establishing the first public school in Manhattan.
De Witt Clinton
Also, during his term, De Witt contributed to establishing the New York City Hospital. In 1812, he ran for the United States presidency, but lost to James Madison. However, in 1817, he was elected New York State governor.
