Native Americans - Government

"Think not forever of yourselves, O Chiefs, nor of your own generation. Think of continuing generations of our families; think of our grandchildren and of those yet unborn, whose faces are coming from beneath the ground." Dekanawida, Peacemaker, Founder Of The Iroquois Confederacy

The Iroquois are probably best known for their leadership as one of the earliest democracies. A democracy is a government run by the people. Their government was a lot like the United States' government of today. Under the League of Five Nations, the Iroquois united as a group of tribes. They wanted to promote defense and peace among all five nations. Each nation had its own government, similar to today's state governments of the United States of America.
