Longhouse
Before the Europeans settled in America, there were many people already here. Among them was a very powerful group that lived in modern day New York. We know of them as the Iroquois.

However, they called themselves the Haudenosaunee, or the People of the Longhouse. The Iroquois have survived for hundreds of years. They were outstanding farmers and provided themselves with food, shelter, and clothing. The People of the Longhouse educated their children and had their own oral language. They were very active people; they played sports and games and celebrated national festivals. The Iroquois set up a very structured form of government and developed their own constitution. As many history books have written, the Iroquois did fight many wars, however their main goal was to maintain peace.
