Erie Canal

The Erie Canal opened in 1825. It was built between 1817 and 1825. It was three hundred sixty five miles long starting at the Hudson River in Albany and ending at Lake Erie in Buffalo. After its completion New York Harbor became one of the busiest harbors in America. Building the canal reduced the cost of transportation from Manhattan to Buffalo and towns along the canal grew and thrived. The Erie Canal helped open the western frontier. Many immigrants from the overcrowded eastern cities used the canal to go west.
