Empire State Building
First, they needed land that would support the skyscraper. Skyscrapers and tall buildings need to be built on bedrock. Bedrock is a layer of rock beneath the ground. The bedrock layer is very strong and can support tall and heavy buildings.

Empire State Inc. paid twenty million dollars for the land where a luxurious hotel was located. The hotel was the Waldorf-Astoria located on 5th Avenue between 33rd and 34th Streets. The architectural firm Shreve, Lamb, and Harmon designed the skyscraper. The firm designed the skyscraper to be built easily and quickly.

Assembly line production and hard dangerous work completed the construction in less than two years. Parts of the building were constructed away from the building site. Then when the workers needed the part, it was delivered to the site. The workers put the building together piece-by-piece working under deadlines.

Many workers had to stand hundreds of feet above the ground without any support to complete the construction. Just think, some of the workers could have been immigrants or sons and daughters of immigrants.
