Brooklyn
Bridge
A German civil engineer, named John A. Roebling, was commissioned in 1865, along with Wilhelm Hildenbrand, to design the plans for the new bridge. After reviewing the design, the New York Legislature passed a bill for construction of the bridge to begin. In 1867, the New York Bridge Company was contracted, and Roebling was made head engineer for the project. Two years later, the President of the United States, Ulysses S. Grant, approved the plan. Not long after construction began, John Roebling was in a construction accident, and died. |
