Tenements
Tenement apartment buildings were built in Manhattan and other cities such as Boston, MA and Philadelphia, PA. Many of the tenement homes in Manhattan were built on the Lower East Side.

Tenement apartments could be found in narrow brick buildings built next to each other. There were four to six floors in a building. The tenement apartments were small, overcrowded, and sometimes workplaces for thousands of immigrant families. More than one family might have lived in one tenement apartment.
