Statue of Liberty

On June 19, 1885, the Statue of Liberty arrived in New York Harbor and was placed on Liberty Island. The people of France gave the statue to America as a gift of friendship. Thousands of Americans watched President Grover Cleveland dedicate the Statue of Liberty on October 28, 1886. On October 15, 1924 the statue was designated a National Monument. The Statue was completely restored for her centennial celebration or 100th anniversary on July 4, 1986. This island is now a state park, Liberty State Park.

"Lady Liberty" would meet millions of other people in a very different way. The Statue of Liberty welcomed more than 12 million immigrants to America on their way to Ellis Island.
