Journey Over

Before the journey to America, people needed to pay for the trip. Many used most of their life savings to buy a ticket on a large ship that would cross the Atlantic Ocean and arrive at New York Harbor. Some families would send the father first. He would get a job and earn enough money for his family to join him.

People could buy first, second or third class tickets. Third class tickets cost the lowest amount. The upper decks of the ship were for first and second-class passengers. If you purchased a first-class or second-class ticket, you had a private room or cabin that was clean and large. The rooms had nice furniture, windows, and most had bathrooms. You would be served delicious meals in a dining room with entertainment.
