Ellis
Island
From 1892 to 1954, more than 12 million people entered America through the Ellis Island Immigration Center located on Ellis Island. The immigration center closed in 1954. Before Ellis Island became the immigration center, Native Americans would dig for oysters and clams on its shores. Later, Dutch settlers used it as a picnic area. In 1770 Samuel Ellis bought the island. After Mr. Ellis' death the United States government |

over the island and stored ammunition on it. In 1890, President Harrison
had the ammunition removed and construction of the immigration center
began. It was completed in 1892. Before
immigrants came through Ellis Island, Caste Garden, located at the tip
of Manhattan, was the location of the immigration center.
(Did you know that 15-year-old Annie Moore was the first person to enter America through Ellis Island in 1892? Annie was from Ireland.) |
