After taking a journey through the New York State virtual museum, choose one of the following questions. Go back to the wing to which the question is related and look for details to help you answer the question. Remember to use the proper formats for a friendly letter and a diary letter.

1. Pretend you are a factory worker and tell about an average day. If you were a labor worker during the late 1800s – early 1900s, what was life like? Write this in a diary form. Get creative and put yourself in their shoes.

2. Imagine you’re a member of an immigrant family that sailed to the United States in 1880 on a ship. Write a letter to a friend in your old country telling what life was like aboard the ship. Use a separate sheet of paper.

3. Pretend you are a Native American child around the age of 10 or 11. What would be some duties you would have to do during the day? What would you do for fun? What would you wear? What types of food would you eat?

4. Write a letter to the architect who created the Statue of Liberty. Tell him what the Statue of Liberty means to you as an American citizen.
