The Westchester Classic
Housing Information

Each year the Lakeland District Debate Team hosts a debate tournament at Lakeland High School, in which hundreds of debaters from around the country come to compete. In order the make this year’s Westchester Classic, held the weekend of February 29th to March 2nd, a success, we need your help. All of the participants need a place to stay! As such, we are looking for volunteers willing to house these debaters. Throughout the year, families house our debaters as they travel to and compete in various places, and given the lack of hotel options in the area, we need to accommodate as many debaters as we can with housing. Because our tournament has expanded to three days, most students will need to be housed the nights of Friday, February 29th and Saturday, March 1st. If you are willing to house debaters either or both nights, please fill out the attached form and return it to the Mr. Bauschard’s mailbox located in the main office.

If you are considering housing, here are some things you should know:

    • Debaters will be ready to leave at 10:15 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday night. We request housing families arrive by 10:00 p.m.
    • Debaters must arrive by 7:30 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday morning. Some student may wish to arrive earlier to meet with their teammates or prep for their first debates, but that can be arranged with your guests.
    • Beds are not necessary. All debaters bring their own sleeping bags and only require a floor.
If you are housing for two nights, an available shower sometime over the weekend would be appreciated.
    • It is not necessary to provide breakfast for the debaters. The orchestra will provide bagels and various morning beverages at a minimal cost.

Both pick up and drop off will occur at Lakeland High School. A housing desk will be set up in the front hall of the high school. Parents or students picking up debaters are asked to check in at the desk where they will receive the names of their debaters and any additional information needed for the following morning.

Also, housing debaters is worth 10 hours of National Honor Society service if you house for one night and 20 hours if you house for both. You will receive a letter confirming these hours the night you pick up your debaters.

If you have any further questions please feel free to email Mr. Bauschard at sbauschard@lakelandschools.org.
