Ten students from Walter Panas High School attended the annual Human Rights Conference at Manhattanville College on Wednesday,March 12th. The program, funded by the Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center, focused on the abuse of human rights and injustices,and the importance of the youth confronting these issues. Four Panas students also facilitated two of the workshops. The event attracted a total of 300 students and educators from approximately 25 area schools. Posted April 25, 2008
District Debaters Take NYS Title: The Lakeland district debate team of Jason Wright (L) & Taylor Roth (L) won the varsity division of the New York State Championship tournament in Albany recently. Jason was the tournament's best overall individual speaker and Taylor was the 5th best speaker. In junior varsity, the teams of Mackenzie Carroll (P)/Jack Chong (P) and Chris Grossman(P)/Patrick Cheung (L) both reached the semi-finals. They finished 3rd and 4th. Collectively, the team finished 17-5. This record enabled the district to capture first place in the sweepstakes competition – an award given to the program with the best overall tournament performance. Posted April 25, 2008
Students from Benjamin Franklin Elementary School read books they have created as part of the Kids to Kids International After School Club. The student-created books will be sent to students at an all-girls school in Afghanistan. Children created pictures books for the students of a newly built school there during this program. Substance Abuse Forum, Tuesday, April 8: The Alliance for Safe Kids Presents a Community Forum, "Everything You Want to Know About Substance Abuse But Don't Know Who To Ask" on Tuesday, April 8 at the Yorktown Jewish Center located on Route 202 at 7:00 p.m. Michael Nerney, an internationally known substance abuse specialist will talk to parents and students about alcohol and drugs.
The Alliance For Safe Kids (ASK) is sponsoring the event. ASK is a coalition of Yorktown residents dedicated to protecting today's teens from the dangers of alcohol and other drugs, gambling, violence, and other destructive influences. Lakeland High School Senior Class Fashion Show, March 28: Lakeland High School parents and seniors are preparing to host the annual Senior Fashion Show. This exciting event will be held on Friday, March 28 at 8:00 p.m. in school auditorium. The silent auction portion starts at 6:30 p.m. The theme this year is "Tune into your Favorite Fashion."
Middle School Hours Special Information Board Meeting March 19: The Board of Education will hold a special meeting to discuss the Middle School Hours proposals on March 19 at Lakeland Copper Beech Middle School. Lakeland Superintendent Kenneth Connolly will present information regarding the proposals and answer questions from the public. The presentation will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. Spring College Night at LHS March 12: A spring college information meeting will be held at Lakeland High School on Wednesday, March 12th at 7:00 p.m. The event is open to parents and students of all grade levels. SAT Testing at Lakeland High School March 15: The SAT testing scheduled for Saturday, March 1, 2008 was cancelled due to inclement weather conditions. The make-up date for the exam is Saturday, March 15, 2008 at Lakeland High School.
Spring College Nights: This year's spring college night were held at Walter Panas High School on Wednesday, March 5th at 7:00 p.m., and at Lakeland High School on Wednesday, March 12th at 7:00 p.m. College admissions directors will be presenting important information and updates regarding the college search and application process. These events are open to parents and students of all grade levels, and particularly necessary for all eleventh graders. Posted March 13, 2008
Middle School, Walter Panas HS Teams Take 1st in Destination Imagination Tournament; Four District Teams Qualify for States: It was another successful Destination Imagination Tournament last week for teams from the Lakeland Central School District in regional competition held at Yorktown High School. District teams from Walter Panas High School, Lakeland Copper Beech Middle School, Lincoln-Titus Elementary School and Benjamin Franklin Elementary School all qualified for the New York State tournament in Endicott, New York this month.
Taking first in their challenges were:
Lakeland Copper Beech Middle School's DI team, Five Flippin' Flapjacks, in the Switch! Challenge and Walter Panas High School's Y Do DI? in the Obstacles of Course! Challenge.
Meanwhile, the Down Down Underground Challengers from Lincoln-Titus Elementary School took second place at the Elementary Level in the Switch! Challenge and qualified for the state tournament.
Finally, the Ben Franklin Elementary School team, Mystical Crazy Bright Idea Turtles from Egypt, took third in the DI've Got A Secret! Challenge and will also move on to the state tournament. In addition, the team won the prestigious Spirit of DI award.
Destination ImagiNation is a community-based, school-friendly program that builds participants' creativity, problem solving, and teamwork in enjoyable and meaningful ways. Teams of five to seven members work together to apply creativity, critical thinking and their particular talents to solve a Team Challenge. The Destination ImagiNation
Team Challenge is a Challenge that is solved over a period of eight weeks or more. There are five competitive Team Challenges from which teams may choose, each with its own educational focus.
