Message from the Superintendent

August 3, 2020

Lakeland Community,

The purpose of this document is to provide an initial framework for families and staff to plan for the fall. The plan is based on federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and guidance, as well as several weeks of discussion and work by the District Reentry Team (DRT), and subject-specific task forces. Each task force worked with a representative committee of staff, parents and our District Physician to develop plans for three possible reentry scenarios: 100% remote, 100% in-person, and a hybrid or a mixed model.

Depending on the Governor’s final decision on the reopening of schools, we are prepared to implement any of these three models. In addition, if circumstances change throughout the school year, we are prepared to move between models based on directives from New York State.

This is a “living” fluid document that will be subject to adjustments and the inclusion of additional details based on the continued work of our task forces, changes to our state or local status in relation to the virus, and community input.

The health and safety of our students and our staff is our top priority. We are committed to providing a learning environment that is as safe and healthy as possible for our students and staff while providing meaningful instruction and learning opportunities.

If you have any questions and concerns after reading the plan, please email reopening@lakelandschools.org, and we will respond as quickly as possible.

Thank you for your support and patience as we continue to work together through these difficult and unprecedented times. Be well.

Brendan Lyons, Ed. D.
Superintendent of Schools
