Take the Web De-TECH-Test

After completing the Take the Web De-Tech Test, a unit on information literacy, Ms. Conte's students answered the question, "Should the Internet Be Regulated?" through a writing response.

Should The Internet Be Regulated?
By: Mihir P.

No, I don’t think the Internet should be regulated. Right now, anyone can put sites on the Internet, and I think it should stay that way. These are some reasons why I think that.
First, I think the Internet shouldn’t be regulated because the number of websites on the Internet is too large. No government authority could check all of them. There are already billions of sites, and millions more are being added every minute. It is impossible to check all the sites already there, let alone keep up with the number of sites coming in.
Secondly, I think the Internet should not be regulated because people should know good sites from bad ones. “The Pacific Tree Octopus” had no bibliography. “Feline Reactions to Bearded Men” had a bibliography that said Madonna, Dr. Seuss, and Arnold Schwarzenegger were writing their research books and websites. There are also many other ways to tell this. If you are researching a topic, you should read a book before going on the Internet.  That way, you know a little about what you are researching.
Third, no one should regulate the Internet because people would think it is unconstitutional and unfair. Many people put web sites on the Internet for fun, such as the author of ‘Ant Cam’. If those people left because of Internet regulation, America’s economy would collapse.

Yes, I do think the Internet should be regulated. I think regulating the Internet is important because it might make the Internet much, much safer. Also, it might help someone answer a question, and get a real answer.  It would not be a biased answer in any way.
People are putting things that either don’t belong on the Internet or put up sites that are not appropriate. For example Rosy, Victoria, and I did a site called Ant Cam. The site was real with factual information, but other sites out there on the Internet are fake and biased in every way.
I think the government should regulate the Internet at least once every three months. Which is only four times in one year. It might be that much but it might help someone. For example if someone was doing a report and looked up something on the Internet they would probably want the information they look up to be factual not biased in anyway. For example, like if I was doing a report on dogs, I wouldn’t want in the paragraph to say that is why I like dogs.  That would be biased.
For my third example on why I think the government needs to regulate the Internet is because of the people can get scammed. For example, Funphone.com had a weird product for your phone to enhance your voice when you are talking to someone. I thought that was a scam. And it was, they just wanted your money. When people are on the Internet they shouldn’t have to worry about pop-ups, and being scammed. Also, people could create a virus and send it to anyone’s computer.
The conclusion I made is that no one regulates the Internet but someone should. So if the government regulated the Internet it would be make people feel safer.  It would make it easier for anyone to use the Internet and actually get real information. That is why I think the Internet should be regulated.

Yes I think the Internet should be regulated. I think it should be regulated because any one can start a website, and anyone who has a computer can go on the Internet.
If you are doing a report you don’t know if it’s a real site so you might get a bad grade from using incorrect information. Also it should be regulated because some people set up websites like Dog Island were trying to get you to send them your dog. Also websites like fun phone were trying to get you to throw away your phone and talk by typing in a number and the computer would call the person so we tried to call 911 and it didn’t work it said call lost or things like that. You should also look for bibliographies but you should make sure that they are real. One way to make that the way to make sure that they are real is to look and see who wrote the book like feline reactions to facial hair they said that dr. Seuss and Arnold Shwarzenhaga and Maddona wrote books on that so we realized that it probably wasn’t a real site
In conclusion the Internet should be regulated so that you wouldn’t get a bad grade on a report or give up something you like or scam you for money. As you can see the Internet should be regulated.

Should The Internet Be Regulated?

I don’t think the Internet shouldn’t be regulated.  I think the people who make the site should know right from wrong.  Also the government has better things to do.

One reason I think the Internet shouldn’t be regulated is because the people who make the sites should know that it is wrong to make a fake site.  For example www.DogIsland.com is just trying to take your dog away from you.  Www.TreeOctopus.com is a site that is trying to get your money from you to save a tree octopus that isn’t real.

Another reason why the Internet shouldn’t be regulated is because our government shouldn’t have to go on every single website and find out if it is real or fake.  For example in the Feline Reactions to Bearded Men you would think it is real because someone did take responsibility for the site and there was a bibliography.  But when you looked at the bibliography, it had information like feline reactions to Madonna, the singer, because she had hairy legs.

Also another reason I think the Internet shouldn’t be regulated is because even if you have the information that you think is fake it may not be fake because you don’t know for sure.

As you can see those are the reasons why I think the Internet shouldn’t be regulated.  People should know that it is wrong; our government shouldn’t have to go on to see if it is real or fake and you don’t even know if it is false information.
