Therapy pets are animals that help human beings just by visiting with them. Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) is the term now used to describe therapy pets. Usually there is one pet and one handler assigned to one person. The health care facility or nursing home works with the handler and the pet to figure out ways that the therapy will be best suited to the patient. Cats and dogs are the most common therapy pets but there is no reason other animals cannot be trained for therapy. A good therapy pet must have a good personality and be able to get along with most everyone. People in nursing homes feel less lonely and less depressed when visited by a therapy pet. Having a pet visit will cheer up a person and take away the drudgery in their every day lives. People who are visited by pets become more sociable and active after visiting with a therapy pet. Therapy pets have also become friends to people in hospitals. When people are in hospitals they can be sad so the pets come and cheer them up. Kids really like it when the AAT animal comes to visit them. The therapy pet helps the patient to forget about their illness, loneliness and pain for a little while. It also makes the patient happy to have something to look forward to when visiting hours are over.
