Crickets: Nature's Thermometers

Did you know that a cricket can be your every day thermometer? Best of all, you don't have to buy one to know the temperature. Here's how:

Gather the following materials:

  • A cricket
  • A piece of paper
  • A calculator and/or stopwatch

Now do the following:

  1. Start your stopwatch and start counting the number of chirps the cricket makes in 15 seconds
  2. Write down the number of chirps that you get
  3. Add that number to 40
  4. That number should be pretty close to the actual temperature!

Get a thermometer and check to see if this is true.
