Dolphin Therapy
For
decades dolphins have been known to have incredible healing powers.
Now, dolphin therapy is a new step toward curing people with certain
diseases. Recently in Florida “Dr Dave” Nathanson and David Cole have
explored how contact by sick people with dolphins has had positive outcomes.
The diseases
that have been treated successfully so far are autism, cancer, Down’s
Syndrome and other neurological and movement diseases. The thinking
is that the dolphins relax the patient, thus stimulating the patient’s
immune systems. This is measured by monitoring the person’s brainwaves.
Nathanson and
Cole believe that there is more to it than simple relaxation. They
believe that “cavitation” occurs. Cavitation is when an amount of energy
is produced that can change the physical structure of fluids and tissues
changing the body’s metabolism. They believe that dolphins can do this;
other scientists are doubtful of the results.
This treatment
is in its experimental stages and is considered by many to be a “last
resort” for very sick patients.
In Panama City,
Florida, a “Serenity Program” is available for special-needs children.
The program staff believes that the interaction of large, air breathing
dolphins with the children can enable them to improve their communication
skills. Parents of these children have maintained that the chance to
swim with the dolphins has changed their child’s life.
“DR Dave” maintains
that the children who work with the dolphins learn up to four times
faster than they would in a classroom. But these programs are very
expensive. Dr. Dave is developing a “virtual dolphin experience” which
will enable other children to capture the feelings and thrills of swimming
with the dolphins without leaving home.
