School News
The Lakeland Alternative High School is a part of the Lakeland Central School District.  The school enrolls students in grades nine through twelve.

Who should attend Lakeland Alternative High School?

Students who need a small class/school environment in which to succeed.

Students who are in need of a nurturing school community.

Students who may benefit from a less stressful school experience.

Students whose school performance is lower than expected.

Students who show avoidance behaviors such as cutting class or being truant from school.

What classes can I take at Lakeland Alternative H.S.?

Students have a full complement of high school courses.  Classes are Regents level.  Ninth grade students take a full day of classes.  Upperclassmen attend class for half the day.  All classes are forty-four minutes in length.

What other programs are available for the upper classmen?

For the second part of the day, the upperclassmen may attend the Tech Center, take part in our work-experience/internship program or attend classes at their home high school.

Will I be prepared to take New York State Regents exams?

Absolutely.  Our staff works intensively with the students to prepare them for the exams. Students perform extremely well on the Regents exams.

Aside from being a small school, how is LAHS different from larger schools?

It is important to develop a personal relationship with the students.  Each student is assigned to a teacher who becomes her/his own personal student adviser.  The teachers take a special interest in each of their students.

In addition to learning academics, students learn problem-solving skills, develop an understanding of motivation theory, and are encouraged to make positive choices.  This is accomplished by their taking part in our Choice Theory program.

Can I play on a team at my home high school?

Yes.  As long as you are in good academic standing, you are encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities.

Can I return to my home high school?

Yes.  Many of our students find that they are successful in a small school environment and choose to stay with us.  However, other students use LAHS as a steppingstone to renew their commitment to learning and earn their way back to their home high school.

What do LAHS students do after they graduate?

Our students have the same choices as any other student.  They attend two and four year colleges, technical and trade institutes, join the military, or go into the work force.
