Professor Boole did not know that his work would become important to computer science. Computers were not invented during his lifetime.
He was born on November 2, 1815, in Lincolnshire, England. Boole did not attend school. He was self-taught. He became known through the papers he published in scientific journals. In 1844, the Royal Society awarded Boole the Royal Medal for his contributions to the anyalysis of both small and large numbers.
In 1849 Boole was asked to become a professor at Queens College (County Cork, Ireland) in mathematics even though he had no university degree. After many more published papers and honors, Professor Boole died on December 8, 1864.
