Welcome to the Department
of Special Education and Pupil Personnel Services. We work continually throughout the year to improve programs
and expand the continuum of services. A District Committee on Special Education meets to discuss and problem
solve issues that affect programs for students with disabilities. The membership of the Committee
includes teachers and administrators from every building and program in the
Lakeland School District.
Several sub-committees are
operating at the present time. There is the Board of Education sub-committee, Elementary, Middle School
and High School sub-committees, annual review procedures and re-evaluation
sub-committee, and a sub-committee to address the information on the IEP
data-base system. These
sub-committees address issues unique to each building or specific areas
affecting special education programs. The work of these committees is discussed at each SEPTA monthly meeting where parents have an
opportunity to offer ideas or suggestions.
Support is provided from kindergarten to high school graduation or age 21. We work with the Counties of Westchester and Putnam Department of Health to support programs for children from age 3 to 5 who are classified and in need of special education services. At least annually, the Committee on Special Education (CSE), and the Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) schedule meetings to determine the appropriateness of the student's program and to determine the need for continued classified support. Parents are integral members of the Committee in planning for the students needs. The goal for each special education student is to maximize his/her opportunities for participating in the regular education program to the appropriate extent possible. PLEASE NOTE: We are currently updating the Special Education web pages. If you have questions about a particular program, please contact the Special Education Department at 245-1700 ext. 236.
