Here is what our tree looks like in February. This is a live oak tree that we planted last year. Our school is only 3 years old so we don't have any giant trees yet. We placed a bird feeder in the tree that has been visited often by our hungry, feathered friends.

Here is a poem our class wrote about our tree.

The important thing about our tree is that it grows in our school yard.
It is a home for birds and insects.
There is deer moss growing on the trunk.
Our tree is about 10 feet tall.
Someday it will give us a lot of shade on hot days.
But the most important thing about our tree is that it lives in our school yard.

And here is our tree in May.

We read the book A TREE IS NICE by Janice May Udry. After reading we brainstormed and listed the reasons our tree is nice. Each child picked, wrote and illustrated a picture for our class book, "Our tree is Nice."

Here is the list of reasons our tree is nice:
Our tree is nice because…

It is a home for birds.
It has a bird's nest.
It will give us shade when it gets big.
It is pretty and green,
Ladybug beetles live on the leaves.
It is growing tall.
It is in front of our school.
Someday I can climb it.
I like the way the bark feels.

Our tree has a type of moss called deer moss growing around the trunk. We will research what effects the moss will have on our tree.

In February, our tree had small buds starting to grow on the tips of the branches.
