The bark of our moon tree |

Observations About Our Tree The tree is the moon tree. It was grown from a seed taken to the moon and back on Apollo 14. Astronaut Stuart Roosa is the one who took it. It was with many other seeds. In 1976 NASA gave out two seeds to every state. Also, those who wanted one could write a nice letter to NASA about how they were going to plant the tree for the Bicentennial. So, our Girl Scout camp in Cannelton wrote a letter and received this seedling. It is a sycamore tree. Our school made a nice report on this tree. You can see the report by clicking here. (http://www.zip.com.au/~elanora/tusmoon.html) When it was dedicated to the camp, Norman Grissom, the brother of Apollo 1 Astronaut Gus Grissom who perished when Apollo 1 caught fire, came and dedicated the tree. :-) Stuart Roosa loved trees - he was a smoke jumper before he was an astronaut. His son saw our moon tree report on the Internet ans wrote to us. His name is Jack Roosa. He is a fighter pilot and trains other pilots. He still writes to our school today.
