Our Tree in Autumn

Fall Tree

Warm temperatures have really convinced many of us that Global Warming is with us big time! We have seen record high temperatures this fall. It is interesting to look back at last year's data to find that the temperatures this year are averaging 10 degrees warmer. T-shirts and even shorts are still in order for wearing to school, and we haven’t even had a hard frost in the Outdoor Classroom so the flowers and insects are still flourishing. The crab apple tree that we stand under for our class pictures is dropping its leaves without really changing colors but the crab apples on it are bright red. Last night we had violent weather that sent us scurrying for our basements, much more like spring than autumn in Michigan.

Our Tree in Winter

Winter Tree

Early January brought us eight inches of snow, below zero temperatures, a record high temperature of 64°, and major flooding—all within one week! Welcome to Michigan , where if you don't like the weather, just wait five minutes. Snow and cold arrived just in time for our Winter Science Hike and so we managed to make lots of observations of the changes of winter. We dug out our winter jackets, snow pants and boots and have needed them ever since. We have had two snow- and one low wind chill-days, and we are allowed just one more before we'll have to make them up. This week we had below zero temperatures so it will be different than last week, when we did our observations. Each day seems to bring a little more snow so we have lots of piles to play in on the playground. We made snow creatures with lots of decorations and wrote "5W" poems to go with them. Now they're posted in the hallway outside our classroom for everyone to see.  Here are some of them for our Seasonal Changes friends to enjoy, too.
