Lakeland Central School District Debate Team Visit to Thomas Jefferson Elementary School

Lakeland Central School District’s debate team, coached by Mr. Stefan Bauschard, presented a debate at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School this morning. The topic: Elementary schools should not assign homework. Fifth grade students listened intently to the team, divided into pros and cons, as they presented their ideas, backed by evidence. Then, there was the rebuttal and final focus periods. Students voted and eight changed their opinions on the topic based on the debate, while 14 decided homework should be assigned. Given the audience, this was quite impressive! A lively question and answer period ensued. The students thoroughly enjoyed the debate and some have already decided they are signing up for the H.S. debate team! Thank you to Juhi, Anchal, Abishek, Chandani, and Selma, along with Mr. Bauschard, for a wonderful morning.
